Why Compost?

Did you know more than half of what Fort Collins residents throw away can be composted? The benefits of composting range from saving money on trash bills, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, to growing healthy plants and using less water on landscapes. For more information about composting and how to do it right, visit www.fcgov.com/compost

“Clay soil, common in the Fort Collins area, doesn’t absorb water quickly and often results in runoff. Adding a soil amendment improves the soil structure and increases the rate of water infiltration – which also helps you use less water.”

Katie Collins

Water Conversation Coordinator, Fort Collins Utilities

Honore Depew

Environmental Planner, Fort Collins Sustainability Services

“Composting food scraps and yard trimmings is one of the most effective actions you can take to help achieve the ambitious community goals Fort Collins has for reducing waste and greenhouse gas emissions.”
